Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a gentle and effective type of manual therapy often used to address musculoskeletal dysfunctions such as tightness, stiffness, or limited range of motion. In this technique, the practitioner positions the client in a way that targets a specific muscle or group of muscles. The client is then asked to gently contract those muscles while the practitioner applies a controlled resistance. After holding the contraction for a few seconds, the muscle is allowed to relax, and the practitioner guides it into a new, more extended position.
By repeating this process, MET helps to lengthen shortened muscles, improve joint mobility, and restore balance in the musculoskeletal system. It is considered a cooperative approach, as it requires the active participation of the client, making it different from passive stretching techniques. MET is often used to reduce muscle tension, improve posture, increase flexibility, and support overall pain relief.
